Trust Your Memory

It is a myth that we forget easily. Unless you are in a different health condition or you do not practice well, you really do not forget. Do you forget your name? Your address? No is the answer even when you are in the most adverse situation. My teacher gave an example that I always relate to. He told us that a bomber pilot always drops the bomb at the exact point even if while in class, the pilot draws an incorrect map.

I am not trying to say memory never gets impacted, yes it does. If you do not manage your stress, it does impact your short-term memory, you go blank or you forget half of the answer etc.

  • Your memory works best when you have moderate stress
  • It works worst when you do not manage your stress

I am sure you are managing stress by creating an environment to study, focusing well, doing the task at hand rather than worrying about future entrance tests, career aspects, your dream institute etc.

The best learning happens when you recall information. It is better to recall by writing bullets points in your notebook. Take a sample paper and recall the information for the incorrect answers or the questions you could not attempt. Repeat these questions before your exam.

Test yourself repeatedly on the topic you have learned at a particular interval, mark it Revision 1, 2, 3 etc. When you start doing this, the real memory magic happens. This will build your confidence.

When you are doing retrieval practice, if you are struggling to remember more than half of the topic you are studying, you probably need to back up a step. Re-read your notes again, or break the topic down into smaller portions and practise one section at a time. In case this is easy, then keep a longer gap to retest.

Feed your brain with more information and revise it. It works best with a support system. So, eat well, eat healthy, eat on time to get more energy, study in your prime time (already mentioned in the stress management article) maintain a straight posture while studying, and avoid distraction.

All the best.
